Wireless Flash control with the Canon 60D Video
Controlling your remote Canon flashes with the Canon 60D Popup Flash
I see. In that case ...
I see. In that case the 17-50 would work but also consider the new Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 VC. That? would give you 24-70 and you already have the 70-200.
Mark, I? already ...
Mark, I? already have the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 F2.8 L IS Mark 2 II USM.
I was looking for a zoom to 75mm
It will perform ok ...
It will perform ok for sports. It can hunt in low light if there isn't enough contrast to focus on but even some of the best Canon lenses do that. 17-50 is a little? short for sports and most people shoot at least with a 70-200 to get closer to the action. I would probably use that lens more for sports than the 17-50. If you're looking to save money, Tamron's 70-200 isn't a bad way to go.
That's the one I ...
That's the one I have been looking at, but not sure if it will do for? sports action
At the time when I ...
At the time when I made this video I was? using the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 non VC model. It was a great lens but I switched to primes for now.
You mention in the ...
You mention in the video that you are using a Tamron lens.? Which model?
Mark, thanks for ...
Mark, thanks for excellent explanation. I bought the 60D last year & have only been using the camera flash until recently. I dug out my Cobra 700 AF & tried it at a Mountain Bike Time Trial last weekend, but found it not quick enough. So? I splashed out on a second-hand 430Ex. I hadn't realised the 60D would fire the flash wirelessly. So again, many thanks for the vid
I think the timings ...
I think the timings could be improved on the pre-flash showing up in shots. While? you see it in the mirror it really doesn't contribute much of any light to the scene unless you're shooting very close. The tail of the pre-flash is probably = to about 1/64th -1/128th power. I love where Canon has gone with wireless flash capabilities they still have much work to do. Nikon has excelled in wireless flash for years but it looks like Canon is getting the jump on Radio on the new cameras that are out.
Great Video thanks! ...
Great Video thanks!
I understand the concept of the pop up being the trigger, but still can't grasp the concept that it shows up in a mirror shot and seems to add light to the exposure.
Let me explain: Setting is in the middle ie just my 430exII to fire, shoot camera in to a mirror so the pop up and the externals are just visible, and clearly the pop up shows along with the external. Surely if it was a split second pre flash then only the 430ex would? be visible in the shot?? So must add light?
It will in fact ...
It will in fact work with the 430EX. The only difference is you have to flip the switch to the slave mode position versus pushing the zoom button on the 430EXII. I actually prefer the switch on? the 430EX. The 60D is a great camera and I'm sure you're going to enjoy it!
Finally someone who ...
Finally someone who says its not about the equipment but the person who? is using it!!! Im in the final hours before I purchase a Canon 60D though I am interested if the wireless flash trigger will work with a Speedlite 430EX??
it will always fire ...
it will always fire but if you set it right it will not show on the picture ... the flash you see is only to ACTIVATE the wireless flash when set on wireless second option the one with the external flash? logo ONLY
That is normal. The ...
That is normal. The pop-up will always fire and there's no way to turn it off!? It is how the camera communicates with the remote flashes. This is called a pre-flash. The flash actually fires before the actual exposure but not during the exposure.
great? video..but ...
great? video..but my pop up is still flashing :/

thank you mark .. ...
thank you mark ..you are clear ..i am not beginner i was decide to by D60. 1 of reason was this remote control flash & i like really the swivel ? LCD too..
thanks..
I think of it as a ...
I think of it as a ratio. when you select the first option with the : (colon) you're given a second option to select the ration. So it adds an option for 2:1 (and 3:1, and 4:1 etc...) which will make the external flash 2x as powerful as the built in. I haven't worked with? the multiple groups as he describes below (as I only have a single 430) but I played with this feature last night going through the manual.
Thank you!!?
Thank you!!?
They're a little ...
They're a little confusing but I'll try to explain. Funct1 fires all flashes as 1 big Group or you can have a ratio between the ext flash(es) (all Grp as "A") and the popup flash (acts? like a Grp "B"). Funct3 is more flexible. You can fire all flashes as a single Grp "A" (including the popup). You can also have external flashes in Grp A and B with ratio control and fire the popup (think of it as a group "C" as an additional group with it's own flash compensation options. Hope this makes sense!
Under wireless? ...
Under wireless? function, what is the difference the first function and the third function? both use the remote flash and the popup flash? don't they both do the same thing?
Yes you can? use ...
Yes you can? use the ST-E2 wireless transmitter or the a wireless radio trigger. I primarily use the Pocketwizard miniTT1 and FlexTT5 radio triggers. I only use the 60D wireless flash stuff in a pinch!
If I don't want to ...
If I don't want to use the pop up flash as a trigger for wireless, can? I use a wireless transmitter to trigger the flash?
